SBC Day 1

Kevin Ezell

Today was day one of the SBC Pastor’s Conference. Kevin Ezell is the Conference President and he has put together a top notch preaching line up. The theme this year “Greater Things.”

Tonight we heard from David Uth, pastor of FBC Orlando, Steve Gaines, pastor of Bellvue Baptist in Memphis, Ravi Zacharias, and Tony Evans, pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas.

My personal favorite tonight was Ravi Zacharias who spoke on the life of Joseph, who considered to be “a man of all seasons.”

A commend the conference to you. You can listen to the conference live here.

There are also a couple of things worth noting.
1) There is a lot of talk about the recommendations of the GCRTF which will be voted on when the Convention convenes. You can read the recommendations here.
2) Tom Ascol in a tweet said that he has observed more younger messengers at this years conventions than that in years past.

That’s all for right now.

One more thing…

We're official

Charismatic Calvinists at SBTS: Neo-Reformed Ecumenism

Josh Harris @ SBTS Chapel

Today at Southern Seminary Joshua Harris preached and Bob Kauflin led in worship.  The interesting part about that is that they are both a part of Sovereign Grace Ministries which is a charismatic calvinistic “denomination.”  As there is a lot of current discussion in SBC of greater unity between the Calvinistic and Non-Calvinistic Southern Baptists, it seems that this is an interesting connection for SBTS to have.  In a lot of ways I think that it is reflective of the mood of many of those in what has come to be known as the Neo-Reformed camp.  In this camp many young calvinists often identify more with other like minded calvinists rather than with those with whom they are denominationally connected.  Many older SBC leaders have attempted to reach out to the new younger generation that likes Mark Driscoll and John Piper  I think it would be short-sighted to think that these Neo-Reformed have had a fundamental shift from their loose network of Calvinistic ties to loyalty to the SBC.  I say this not in a condemning way.  I think in a lot of ways that there has been a fun fundamental shift in the thinking paradigm of who young reformed guys.  With the advance of technology and new networks being formed, it seems that this “post-denominational” world is more of a reality that often realized.  It can be seen in the strangest places sometimes, such as chapel at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Rules for Youth Camps

This past weekend I took the Pellville Youth Group to DNOW at Camp Schafer and it reminded me of past youth camp experiences I had in High School. Here are some rules that are standard for every youth camp…

1.) Regardless of size, your group will split up…

2.) There will be pizza.

3.) Toby Mac will be the intro & outro music in worship.

4.) Regardless of group size the youth pastor will social media (fbook, tweet) the event. I know, right?

5.) The beds will not be comfortable.

6.) After the worst sleep of your life, the guys will all get up at 6:30a & their volume will already be at 11.

7.) By day 2 at least 1 of the youth have started a new relationship.

8.) There will be cool t-shirts.

9.) Doors to worship will never be opened on time & when the are opened the youth will flood in.

10.) You will be singing in the rain (with motions).

If anyone can think of anymore post them up.

Conclave Update 1

Conclave 2010, this year in Chattanooga, TN., in many ways is everything you would expect; loud worship music, cliche breakout sessions, an exhibit hall and of course preachers in jeans with emergent glasses. I wasn’t expecting much, going as a representative of PBC, but one thing I didn’t expected was to be let down so early. Ergun Caner was the preacher the first night and as you can expect he went on a calvinism rant. At one point, possibly indirectly, calling calvinists the enemy.

Stetzer was pretty good, but not enough to redeem the event so far. This conference is designed to encourage and help youth leaders. So far it has all but convinced me that this is everything that is wrong with youth ministry. I have to go to a break out session, more later…

All I Really Want For Christmas

In recent months, there has been more conversation about adoption, not only in the SBC, but in evangelicalism in general. People like Dr. Russell Moore and musician Steven Curtis Chapman have pushed to make it a priority of the church. Chapman has started shaohannah’s hope, an organization aiding those who seek to adopt, and Dr. Moore has written Adopted For Life: The Priority of Adoption for Christian Families and Churches. Southern Seminary is hosting a Adopting for Life Conference and the list goes on.

As Christians we know that adoption is not merely an issue of providing needs and saving lives, which it is, but it is a theological issue. Paul says, in Ephesians 1:5, He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ. The biblical doctrine of adoption is crucial and maybe the most humbling. We were orphans, strangers with no family,  but God…because of the great love with which he loved us, brought us into his family and made us co-heirs with Christ. And now everything that is true of Jesus is true of us. This is great truth!

With all of that in mind, as the advent season continues on, let us think of and pray for those without family this season. I found this video online; Steven Curtis Chapman’s All I Really Want for Christmas. Let it be a reminder of our adoption and a call to action.
